EPDM rubber roofing replaces a tired flat roof with a single, flexible membrane that covers the whole roof without a joint. Best Top Roofing lays EPDM on a sound deck over garages, rear extensions, dormers and porches across Hertfordshire and Northamptonshire, bonds it down, dresses it up the walls and finishes the edges with neat trims.
EPDM is a synthetic rubber membrane, and on most domestic flat roofs it arrives as one sheet cut to the size of the roof. No seams across the middle means no laps to open up, which is where felt roofs usually start to leak. It stays flexible in frost and summer heat, does not crack as the building moves, and shrugs off UV, so it keeps performing long after a felt roof would have needed replacing.
The quality of an EPDM roof is in the preparation. We strip the old covering, replace any decking that is soft or swollen, sweep and prime the deck, then bond the membrane down with the right adhesives for the field and the perimeter. Edges get proper trims, walls get an upstand with a flashing or termination bar, and the outlet into the gutter is formed so water leaves the roof at the lowest point.
EPDM has a dark, matt finish that looks smart on modern extensions and garages. It is not designed to be a walkway, so for balconies and roof terraces we recommend GRP instead.

How long does an EPDM rubber roof last?
A properly installed EPDM roof lasts for decades, far longer than traditional felt. The membrane manufacturers back their products with long guarantees, and our workmanship is guaranteed on top.
Can EPDM be laid in cold weather?
EPDM is laid dry, but the adhesives need dry conditions and temperatures within their limits. We schedule around the weather and cover the roof if a job is interrupted.
Can I walk on an EPDM roof?
You can walk on it for maintenance, such as clearing a gutter. For a roof that will be used as a balcony or terrace, GRP is the better choice.
Is EPDM more expensive than felt?
It usually costs a little more than felt to install but lasts far longer, so it is better value over the life of the roof. Our flat roof cost guide gives typical ranges.
Can EPDM go on a dormer or porch?
Yes. Dormers, porches, bay window roofs and garage roofs are all ideal for EPDM, because the sheet can be cut to cover the whole roof in one piece.
