Much of Harrow was built in one rush between the wars. The Metropolitan line opened up the fields around Rayners Lane, North Harrow and Kenton, and builders filled them with semis that share a recognisable roof: hipped, covered in clay or concrete plain tiles, with a tile-hung gable over the front bay. Stanmore and Harrow Weald added larger detached houses on the same theme, and there are whole streets of bungalows in Kenton and Belmont. Bungalows suffer at the valleys and around later roof windows. Flat roofs on the back extensions blister, crack at the upstands and pond where the fall was never right.
