Chimney repairs sort out one of the most common sources of roof leaks and falling masonry. A chimney stack is the most exposed brickwork on any house. It takes wind and rain from every side, freezes and thaws all winter, and has warm, damp flue gases rising through the middle of it. Over the decades the mortar erodes, bricks spall, the cement flaunching around the pots cracks, and the lead flashings where the stack passes through the roof tear or pull out of their joints. The first sign is often a damp patch on a chimney breast or a stain on the ceiling beside it.
Our chimney work covers the full stack. We repoint eroded joints, rebuild stacks that are leaning or badly spalled from the roof line up, reset pots in new flaunching or cap disused flues with a stone or concrete cap, and fit cowls to stop birds and rain getting in. At the roof, we renew the lead: the front apron, the step flashings up each side, and the back gutter behind the stack, cut and dressed by hand.
Chimney work needs safe access, so it is usually done from a scaffold rather than ladders. That gives us room to do the brickwork and the lead properly in one visit.

Leaks around chimneys are usually lead, not brickwork, and sometimes both. We fix whichever it is, so the damp patch does not come back.
Chimney repairs: your questions answered
Why is my chimney breast damp?
Rain soaking through porous brickwork, failed flashings, or an open flue with no cap are the usual causes. Condensation inside an unventilated flue can also cause staining. We find which it is before recommending a repair.
Do I need scaffolding for a chimney repair?
For most chimney work, yes. It gives a safe working platform for the brickwork and lead. The scaffold is included in your fixed price.
Should I cap a chimney I no longer use?
Yes, with a vented cap, so rain and birds stay out while the flue still ventilates and does not cause damp inside. If you want the stack gone altogether, see our chimney removal page.
How long does chimney repointing take?
A single stack repoint is usually a day or two once the scaffold is up. A full rebuild above the roof line takes longer.
Do you rebuild chimneys in matching brick?
Yes. We source bricks that match the original as closely as possible, and re-use sound original bricks where we can.
