St Albans has more variety on its roofs than most towns its size. Around the cathedral, Fishpool Street and Holywell Hill the older buildings carry handmade clay tiles on steep pitches. East of the centre, the Victorian and Edwardian streets of Fleetville and the roads off Hatfield Road are terraces roofed in Welsh slate or machine-made clay plain tiles, with chimney stacks shared along the party walls.
